Stephen A. Smith recently made waves with a bold statement linking Taylor Swift to the Kansas City Chiefs’ on-field fortunes. During an episode of First Take, Smith stirred controversy by suggesting that the Chiefs’ perceived preferential treatment from referees might not be entirely unrelated to the presence of Swift, the global superstar and current girlfriend of Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce.

NFL fans have long speculated about the Chiefs benefiting from favoritism, with theories gaining traction as Taylor Swift’s appearances at games have brought massive media attention. Her relationship with Kelce has made her a frequent attendee, and her undeniable star power keeps headlines focused on Kansas City. The NFL has even been accused of leveraging her popularity for its benefit, as her presence drives unprecedented engagement and viewership.

In their latest victory over the Houston Texans, the Chiefs faced accusations of referee bias. Houston’s head coach, DeMeco Ryans, openly criticized the officiating, claiming his team faced an uphill battle against unfair calls. “It was ‘Us vs. Everybody,’ and I mean everybody,” Ryans stated in a fiery press conference.

Smith echoed these sentiments, noting how the Chiefs’ box-office appeal, fueled by Swift and Patrick Mahomes, could unintentionally sway perceptions. “It’s uncomfortable to say, but let’s not ignore the fact that Patrick Mahomes is a massive draw, and Taylor Swift being a Chiefs fan doesn’t hurt either. It doesn’t mean the officials are doing this intentionally, but you can’t blame fans for asking, ‘What’s going on?’” Smith remarked.
The Chiefs have become polarizing in the NFL, with their consistent success and media spotlight earning both admiration and disdain. This dynamic was further emphasized by Kayla Nicole, Kelce’s ex-girlfriend, who recently weighed in on Kansas City’s dominance. Speaking on the I Am Athlete podcast, Nicole praised the team’s offensive power and depth while subtly criticizing other teams’ shortcomings. “They’ve got players who don’t drop the ball in critical moments,” she said, highlighting Kelce’s reliability.
Nicole also shared insights into the Chiefs’ winning culture, crediting head coach Andy Reid, Mahomes, and the electric atmosphere at Arrowhead Stadium. However, her commentary hasn’t shielded her from online backlash, particularly from Swift’s dedicated fanbase. Nicole opened up about the emotional toll of her public breakup with Kelce and the media frenzy surrounding his relationship with Swift, calling the experience overwhelming.
While Swift’s connection to the Chiefs has undoubtedly added a new layer of intrigue to the NFL season, Smith’s remarks have reignited debates about bias and the influence of celebrity presence in sports. As long as the Chiefs continue to dominate and Taylor Swift remains a fixture in the stands, the conversation surrounding their success—and its alleged reasons—will persist.
